Florida Among Top U.S. States Interested In Wine

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

Did you know that Florida was the birthplace of American wine? According to the state’s Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services, Spanish settlers found muscadine grapes growing along the Atlantic coast more than 450 years ago. They used those to create the first wines made in the New World.

From those origins, the United States is now the world’s top country for wine, at least in terms of consumption. According to Statista.com, the U.S. consumed the largest volume of wine of any country, at 34 million hectoliters, in 2022. To toast to National Drinking Wine Day on Feb. 18, 2024, Americans are searching for what wines to uncork in celebration.

And data shows Sunshine State residents love a good chardonnay or merlot.

FloridaBet.com broke from Florida sports betting news and dug into Google Trends to discover the top 10 states most frequently searching “wine” between Jan. 31, 2024 – Feb. 6, 2024. Based on these results, we found finished No. 2 out of states most interested in “wine” compared to other topics.

Interest in Wine is Overflowing in Sunshine State

Florida wine isn’t just for residents, either. According to the Florida Grape Growers Association, there are 25 wineries across the state, from the Emerald Coast Wine Cellars in Destin to Schnebly Redland’s Winery and Brewery in Redland – the southernmost winery in the U.S.

But Florida is part of the Deep South, and not all wines are made with grapes down there. You can also find wines made from blackberries, blueberries, coconuts, mangoes, peaches, pineapples, and, of course, oranges.

Whatever your wine taste, FloridaBet.com is your source for the latest news on future Florida sportsbook apps, sports betting, and gaming developments.
